FITNESS AND HEALING IN COMMUNITY.
The GYROKINESIS® method is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method, which coordinates movement, breath and mental focus.
It is practiced on a mat and chair, without equipment (this is the "equipment-fee" form of the GYROTONIC ® method). By the end of a GYROKINESIS ® session, one's entire system is awakened and brought into greater balance. Focus on the breath stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, resulting in a sense of calm, well-being and mental clarity.
While GYROKINESIS ® classes can be adapted to fit anyone's ability, this particular class is best suited for movers who enjoy graceful choreography and can easily flex and extend their spine without major concern for osteopenia/bone density.
Qi Gong is the energetic foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is the practice of gathering, circulating, and applying life force energy (Qi) to promote healing and wellness. Like nerves, bones, and blood vessels, the body also contains a series of energetic pathways called "meridians”. Qi flows freely through these meridians much like blood flows through our vessels. Disruptions in this smooth flow of Qi occur throughout our lifetime as a result of poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, improper exercise, emotional and physical trauma, and environmental toxins. Qi Gong works to correct these imbalances and blockages that lead to pain and/or illness.
Qi gong is easy on the joints and centering to the mind.
This work stimulates the body's healing potential by aiding in strengthening and regulating the body's internal organs, nervous system, and immune system. Each class consists of specific flowing movements that use the knowledge of the body's meridians to purge, tonify (strengthen), and balance the body's energy flow. Classes are usually taught in a group format, and consist of 30-40 minutes of movement, followed by a guided breathing and meditation. While these classes may not be a “weight bearing workout”, vigorous movement of Qi in the body creates a substantial amount of heat and emotional release, fully exercising the cardiovascular system. Expect to leave class feeling strong, grounded, and energized. And since no special equipment is required, it is a fantastic movement form to take home and incorporate into your healthy lifestyle routine!
I teach two forms of qi gong . On Mondays I lead a form called the "8 Brochades". It's a pretty common form that moves and strengthens qi in the body. On Thursdays, I teach a form called the "5 yin organ healing exercises". This form works to strengthen each of the 5 yin organs to nourish and heal the body. I'd recommend trying them both out and seeing if you prefer one. I also have many students who come to both classes and enjoy both forms.

Pilates is a combination of breathing, concentration, control, centering, flow, postural alignment, precision, relaxation,and stamina. Mind/Body Mat classes emphasize breathing and full body integration of the work to allow your body to not only gain strength and flexibility, but to feel a deep connection and sense of calm after your practice. This class is recommended for most fitness levels.
